5 Ways to On the Run Your Wardrobe on a College Budget

Source

Shop alone.
I know that you love going to the malls with your girls, but if you want success sometimes you have to leave them at home! I have much more success shopping alone than with friends. Shopping is an art & it takes time and patience to find the right pieces, especially when you are on a college budget. However, if I am looking for something to wear to a big event I always bring at least 1 bring along for their advice. Advice can be a bittersweet when trying on clothes, so shop with friends who have style similar to you if you are sensitive. Nonetheless, when you go to shop you need to focus! Shopping is serious business!

Shop with a purpose.
It is easy to get overwhelmed in stores when you do not have a clear purpose. I like to go into stores with an idea of what I want. For example, if I want new sandals I will start out in the shoes and then head to accessories and later apparel. Focus can help you me buying pieces that will just sit in your closet taking up valuable space.

Accessorize like CRAZY!
Beyonce didn't just stick to the basics with her singing career. She fell drunk in love with being the best and standing above the crowd. You can do the same thing by adding accessories to your wardrobe monthly. Maintain a classic set of arm bangles, a gold watch, a black clutch, and stud earrings. Then add a few pieces of costume jewelry, an extra watch or two, a snakeskin clutch, knee-high socks, and a few rings! You can never go wrong with accessories. Rachel Zoe said it best, "Accessories are everything. To me, they're more important than the clothes."

Find style inspiration before you go shopping.
I like to visualize outfits while I am shopping for individual pieces. I have magazine clippings up all over my room for constant inspiration. I really like the denim trend and American Classic style so I try to stick to basic colors and items with clear structured lines. I love structure and darts in my blouses.

Shop at thrift shops & secondhand stores.
I have found 50% of my wardrobe in the local Goodwill. I like to go to thrift stores during the week when there is less traffic. Look out for the days that your favorite shops get in new shipments. I know that the Goodwill next to my house gets in new merchandise from Target once a week, so I try to go on that day. Comment below to kind out which day of the week the Goodwill off of Niflong gets Target goods.

10 Lessons I've Learned Since Freshman Year

1. Speak up for yourself. This world can be harsh and no one is going to baby you.

2. It is okay to feel sexy from time to time. My sexuality is MINE to embrace.

3. Love your body. Gaining weight happens as you grow older, but simply complaining won't change the number on the scale.

4. Trying new things is good for your health. Stepping away from the usual can open up your eyes to some extraordinary.

5. Cheating boyfriends don't magically change into faithful boyfriends. Dump him!

6. True friends are similar to soul mates. No matter how long it's been since you all have last talked or the physical distance between you guys, you can always pick back up without missing a beat.

7. Being a black woman comes with responsibility. We have so many negative stereotypes to overcome!

8. The world doesn't stop for your tears.

10. If you don't define your self-worth then someone else will.

Bonus: Compromise is good for the soul. Sometimes it's okay to give in for peace. Being hard head is not always the right way to go. Stick to your morals, but learn from others.

What useful lessons have you learned while in college? Please share them below. I plan on doing another post for the incoming freshman this fall.

Much Love,
Jas

Friendship Is...

What does the term friend mean? What does it really mean to be bffs and/or besties? People throw these terms around lightly each and everyday on social networks. But my question is what does friendship look like to you?

To me friendship means loyalty, laughter, honesty, and respect. I would consider myself an okay friend. I can be a selfish person by nature. I mean just being honest, I'm stubborn and pretty stuck in my ways like a lot of people I know. I am about my business and that can be a blessing and curse, but back to the issue at hand. What does is mean to be a friend?

To be a friend is to compromise and to give. I was born into a big family, so naturally I grew up with built in best friends. I have five siblings and two rock star parents. Our family is very tight knit and I know that I can rely on my family no matter what the situation is. No matter how many times we fight or argue or crack on each other, we stick together. Friendship looks a lot like family. I thank God for the love and friendship that my parents instilled in us from birth. I would have never ventured off into fashion if my big sister didn't do it first. My siblings and parents are the greatest people in this world and I'm blessed to count them as my friends.

Photographer: James Williams

Hello Fashion Lovers aka TheeFashionStories enthusiasts! Today's interviewee is Mr. James Williams. He is a 22 year old, hardworking, and extremely talented photographer and videographer. He owns his own company, Dapper Media Inc. James specializes in music videos, photo shoots, event coverage, etc. He currently attends the Art Institute of Atlanta. He will be graduating in December with his associates degree in photography. James plans to attend Georgia State University to pursue his bachelors degree in film! He is driven and persistent with his goals! Keep reading to learn more about the man behind the lens, Mr. James Williams.

Where do you see your career in 5 years?
I see myself in a huge retail space working specifically with higher-end clients. I also want to have other photographers and videographers working as my employees with competitive salaries. There will be cyc walls used for photography and videography, seamless paper used for photoshoots, green screens for video work, and etc.

Who have you worked with and/or worked for?
I’ve worked with a lot of people in my career. I’ve worked with a lot of great music artists such as Big KRIT, Nipsey Hussle, Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly, Kid Ink, Kandi (RHOA), and many more.

Currently, I am working as a PA with Tre Native Productions and a video director/producer/editor with Inspire Magazine. I just finished my internship with the Atlanta Film Festival earlier in April. In the future I would love to have a position as photographer/videographer for different fashion and life style magazines that are well-known all around the world. I wouldn’t want a job that would take me away from the work of my company.

What was your motivation behind starting your blog, business, career, etc.?
Photography and film are two of my favorite things on this planet. I love creating work that people can be excited to see and look at for years to come and be pleased with the quality of it. I started my visual arts company in 2009 after I graduated high school. After graduating high school I knew that I wanted to work for myself and make my own decisions as a business man and an artist.  It’s been a long ride since those early days. Now it’s 2014 and I have a new companyname, new website and I am in a whole new city. I’ve met a lot of people and been involved with a lot of companies that have helped me in different ways throughout my career.

Girl Power in Action: Founders of Black Girls Social

April is all about Girl Power here at TheeFashionStories and our first interview is with the lovely founders of Black Girls Social, Tori Lee and Kellee Moore. Black Girls Social is a networking company supporting women of color to be who they are, unapologetically free to dream, create,
explore the unknown and pursue all possibilities on their terms. Tori and Kellee manage an online community of like-minded women of color and host local networking events. BGS is located in Dallas, Texas.

I stumbled upon the Black Girls Social instagram page and was instantly hooked. I all look forward to seeing the uplifting and encouraging daily posts on the BGS page. After stalking their instagram page for a few weeks, I finally ventured onto the actual BGS website. I was excited to find out that women of color, like myself, were doing positive things to uplift and empower one another. That's when I knew that I had to interview the founders. It wasn't until maybe a month and a half later that I finally got the courage to reach out. But when I finally reached out to the BGS team they got me their interview question responses and pictures in no time! Well that's enough background knowledge! Keep reaching to learn more about the lovely founders of Black Girls Social, Tori Lee and Kellee Moore.

Prom in the City

Prom is the City was totally amazing! I know you're probably wondering what Prom in the City is and why the heck I was there. Don't worry I will get to that! This weekend I started my internship with Show Me Shoes and Prom in the City was my first event. Prom in the City was an event put on by Show Me Shoes and Julee Jones of Hot 103 Jamz where young ladies in high school were pampered and given prom dresses. Prom in the City was all about giving back to the community and making each young lady feel special! The day was action packed and filled with laughs. I had a really great time at Prom in the City. Below are more fabulous photos and details! So keep reading gorgeous!

Phresh Night of Fashion

Women of Imagery's Phresh Night of Fashion lived up to the hype! I had a great time watching the show. From start to finish Robin Knight (She was my 8th grade English teacher.) kept the crowd involved and each designer had a very different style. The show started out with a local youth dance crew. The night slowly transitioned into a fashion show, but not your typical show. I have never been to a fashion show where there was so much support of the crowd. The Phresh Crew created a family friendly and fashion forward! Did I mention that I got to snap tons of pictures! Ha I was working with my digital camera and phone, and taking tips from a few local photographers! Check out more photos below!

Weekend Recap: Go Blog Social

This weekend was CRAZY busy for me. I attended my first blogger conference and went to a fashion show. In the process, I learned a ton about blogging as a career, from the aesthetics to the money. I am still on overload from Go Blog Social. Sunday morning I went to church with my mother. Service was exactly what I needed. Apostle Keith Wesley preached about having faith in God. I have been struggling a little bit with that, so his sermon was very encouraging and practical. After church I studied for my exams and then went to help behind the scenes with Women of Imagery's Phresh Night of Fashion. I started helping to plan the show last November, so it was awesome to see it all come together. Overall my weekend was just a preview of future life after college. Did I mention the fact that I had two exams and three quizzes to study for and a project to work on? If I didn't trust God and study along the way I wouldn't have been successful at juggling everything on my plate.

I left school at 6am on Friday morning to attend Go Blog Social in Kansas City and let me tell you, "It was amazing!" When I first heard about the conference I knew that I wanted to go, but I wasn't sure how I would get there on my college budget. So as the conference drew closer I was getting sad because I wanted to go so badly, but I did not have a ticket. One week before the conference I entered two giveaways for Go Blog Social. I entered the giveaway on SaraScoop.com and Kathryn Mansur's instagram page, and ended up winning Kathryn's giveaway. I was amped to be an attendee of Go Blog Social!

Tineka Rentie

My name is Tineka Rentie and I am the Executive Director of Women of Imagery.  I consider myself a late fashion bloomer.  I was always a tomboy of sort growing up and just recently begin to make an attempt to dress on trend.  My goal in life is to feed my servant nature by always being a resource to other women and my community.

What is the purpose of Women of Imagery?
Women of Imagery’s mission is to provide resources to women to assist them in overcoming their present circumstances, empowering them to realize their dreams.

What made you start Women of Imagery?
It was a funny story.  A group of friends had gone with me to Las Vegas for my bachelorette party.  Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances we found ourselves stuck in our hotel room on a Saturday night (in VEGAS).  We talked all night about our goals, dreams, challenges, and insecurities.  We realized that we all come from differing backgrounds and yet as women we are all faced with very similar challenges.  I decided then to develop this organization that will serve as a sisterhood of sorts to empower ourselves and the community.

MY FIRST TIME

My first time was a little bit of everything, from scary to utterly amazing. I felt so free and proud the first time that I shared my blog with the public! I know that you were probably thinking sexually, so sorry to disappoint you but now that I have your attention its time for me to explain myself and (hopefully) inspire YOU in the process! I know how scary it feels to share your craft with others. Millions of thoughts ran through my mind before sharing my blog, from fear of judgement to lack of knowledge about blogging, and tons of other things. I mean really, who was little ol' Jasmine from Raytown, Missouri anyway? I taught myself everything that I know about blogging and Blogger itself by doing hours of online research, trial and error, and good ol' Google!

I graduated from high school at the top of my class and went onto college without a huge list of life goals. Simply put, I just wanted to graduate and start a family. That was all that I wanted for myself... to graduate, get married, and make babies. It sounds silly now, but before I started my blog I didn't have any idea of how great I would be at it. What about you gorgeous? What do you want out of life for yourself?
