10 Lessons I've Learned Since Freshman Year

1. Speak up for yourself. This world can be harsh and no one is going to baby you.

2. It is okay to feel sexy from time to time. My sexuality is MINE to embrace.

3. Love your body. Gaining weight happens as you grow older, but simply complaining won't change the number on the scale.

4. Trying new things is good for your health. Stepping away from the usual can open up your eyes to some extraordinary.

5. Cheating boyfriends don't magically change into faithful boyfriends. Dump him!

6. True friends are similar to soul mates. No matter how long it's been since you all have last talked or the physical distance between you guys, you can always pick back up without missing a beat.

7. Being a black woman comes with responsibility. We have so many negative stereotypes to overcome!

8. The world doesn't stop for your tears.

10. If you don't define your self-worth then someone else will.

Bonus: Compromise is good for the soul. Sometimes it's okay to give in for peace. Being hard head is not always the right way to go. Stick to your morals, but learn from others.

What useful lessons have you learned while in college? Please share them below. I plan on doing another post for the incoming freshman this fall.

Much Love,
Jas

My Room + Decorating Tips

I am a college student so my room is also my creative space aka my studio. I decided that I wanted my creative space to reflect my dreams and goals. My room is my palace where I create greatness and relax. I wanted it to be a place where I can find inspiration, so I started putting things on the walls that  motivated me. Below I have a few pictures and tips to help you create your dream space, rather you are in college or ow your own home.

Advice: Add some color to your wall with creative photos.
1. Hang up anything that inspires you!
I love fashion so I hung up fashion photos, quotes, and my goals on my fashion wall. On another wall I hung up tons of family photos. My family plays a huge role in who I am and want to become so I need their faces up to push me on days when I want to give up.

Advice: Make your own pillows!
2. Adding tons of colors and prints to your bed will add personality to your room.
I made two of the pillows on my bed! I wanted pillows that had a lot of personality and color. I am in the process of redecorating my room right now. Soon I will have a color scheme going throughout my entire bedroom.

Advice: It's the little things that make your room special.
3. Add tissue paper or fabric to your walls to make them pop if you cannot paint them!
I added a glittery tissue passer to my inspiration wall in my bedroom. The glitter adds some sparkle without overpowering the pictures and jewelry hanging on my wall.

Tip: Displaying costume jewelry saves space and is super cute to look at!
4. Display jewelry and accessories on your wall to add personality to your room.
I decided to showcase my statement necklaces on my wall. You could add flowers, quotes, medals, or trophies to your display. Make it your own!

I hope that this small tour was helpful! I will be doing more room tours and DIYs in 2014. Enjoy the rest of 2013 and make things your own! If you have any comments or request please leave them below.

We ShopStyle

Recently I was selected by the PopSugar Team to join the PopSugar Select Blogger Team. I was ecstatic to receive this honor. Not long after PopSugar launched ShopStyle. Below I have arranged all of my favorite items for this fall season! Shop the links below and check out the ShopStyle site here!

This season I have fallen in love with the color black and statement pieces. I have always been a rather plain jane, so this fall I decided to focus on simplicity. I love solids with just a splash of print. Black is slimming, sexy, and god sight just about anything! I have worn my black, leather pencil skirt from Forever21 a few times and I still love it. My House of Rena scarf is one of my personal favorite because of the stripe pattern and soft material. Honestly, my favorite pieces in this collage are my necklaces. I am a sucker for statement pieces. These necklaces range from $10-40, but they are all versatile and eye-catching.

Don't forget to ShopStyle and check out PopSugar while you are doing your Christmas shopping!

Store Review: The Wardrobe

By Jasmine Cooper

Have you ever been in love with a store? Well that is exactly how I feel about The Wardrobe. I am head over heels in love with The Wardrobe's low price, friendly environment, and purpose. Not to mention, I always find amazing pieces to add to my wardrobe. I love to thrift shop, so when a friend of mine told me about The Wardrobe I just had to check it out. Keep reading to learn more about my experiences and then head on over to The Wardrobe! Here is the address:

715 Park Avenue
Columbia, Missouri 65201

Low Prices:
Nearly everything inside of The Wardrobe costs $1 except for specialty items. Sometimes they even have $0.25 sales at the end of a season. That's when nearly everything in the store only costs a quarter, as if the prices aren't already low enough!

Friendly Environment:
Every "worker" that you will see inside The Wardrobe is a volunteer. The volunteers work hard to keep the store clean, organized, and calm. They are always eager to help and super sweet. I feel right at home when I am shopping at The Wardrobe! It's not everyday that you walk into a retailer and find staff willing to help you find whatever you need.

Purpose:
Proceeds from The Wardrobe go straight towards children in the Columbia, Missouri area. I find this to be beautiful. The Wardrobe is run by volunteers and all of the proceeds are donated to those in need. Wow! During the week The Wardrobe is closed to the public to help those who need extra help in the Columbia,Missouri community. It truly warms my heart when I think about the goodness in the hearts of those who serve at The Wardrobe.

Final Thoughts:
For anyone who feels as though there is not hope in the world, just look for it in the little things around you. Places like The Wardrobe are beckons of light.

I have so many pieces from The Wardrobe that it is a little obsessive, but I cannot stop shopping there! The Wardrobe is amazing and the purpose behind the store is beautiful. You can check out some of my last Wardrobe haul here.

Make sure you bring cash.

Much Love,
Jas the Stylist

Ps. I make nearly all of my TFS beanies using old sweaters from the wardrobe. Check them out here.

Christian College Girl Rant

By Jasmine Cooper

I have been messing up for a really long time... sinning and ministering, then crying and sinning and asking for forgiveness again. Now I can finally see that those times made me who God already created me to be. All of my drunk nights and sad times have given me a new perspective on life. I am not perfect or trying to be anymore, but I am striving to make it to heaven with a life poured out.
I was looking at my earlier posts and videos yesterday when it hit me that I have been so focused on fashion that I forgot about God. It's crazy how I treated my blessing aka this blog as an idol without even knowing it. I have been making this blog and my career my idols for a few months now. I have been so distracted with things and people that I almost missed what God has been trying to tell me. It's not about what people think or say, but about how God sees you.

As I spoke with some of my good friends last nigh it dawned on me that many people are falling away from God or doing things that make us question our faith... it's sad, but not irreversible. Starting today I am going to make a conscious effort to live better and acknowledge Christ more. I know that I have been wildin' in college and making a mockery of Christ, that I can admit unfortunately. I can honestly say that in the midst of trying to find myself that I lost God. Somewhere long ago, I stopped believing in grace and only wanted God's favor. I wanted him to bless me, but not bother with my lust and drinking problem. I figured that those things were just who I had become, but now I see that God wants me to be pure and holy just as he is. I wanted his money, but not his rebuke. Pretty much, I wanted the glory without the pain.
Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. Hebrews 2:18
Honestly, I cannot say I won't sin again because I am human. I just know that I want to please God. I am thankful for this revelation and wanted to share it with you. So what about you? How is your spiritual walk? What is going on in your life that is pulling you away from God? What idols are you putting before Christ? I have found that in my weakest and darkest moments... God speaks to me the clearest. For a long time, I held onto a relationship that I wanted to work. I wanted the American dream, high school sweethearts to marriage, together forever just like on TV... up until recently, I believed that you should stick it out no matter what. Now I know that to be loved is precious and wonderful. Love does not hurt and you should not "force" someone to love you. So although I am still heart broken and I've made a mess of my life... I can say that I have never felt so free. It feels good knowing that my life is not over because of my sins. My world is not finished because it didn't work out with one guy. I just want to encourage you to value yourself because once you really love and learn yourself, you won't settle in any area of your life.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV
I was very vulnerable with this post, but I know that someone else besides myself needed to know that God's love does not stop because we sin. His grace is sufficient and we can always run to him. We are all "hypocrites" and have secret sins, so stop pointing the finger. We can hide it from everyone else, but not God. If you are really struggling with something I would suggest that you find someone to pray with you because no one can do it alone. Have a great week and keep the faith!

Much Love,
Jas

Food for thought: We all have a story. If you could erase the hard parts of yours, would you?

Repost: Nickels & Dimes: Warby Parker x DonorsChoose.org

By Cicely Haire

SPR_SUM_2013_6979-BIG_edit_sun-crop

In my opinion, there is nothing cooler than combining philanthropy with fashion. Stylish brands like TOMS and FEED for Target allow shoppers like me to give back to the global community while lining our closets with bags, shoes, hoodies and more. Talk about retail therapy!

For that reason, I am so excited about Warby Parker’s partnership with non-profit organization DonorsChoose.org. Revolutionary eyewear brand Warby Parker was founded by four friends, Neil Blumenthal, Andrew Hunt, Jeffrey Raider and David Gilboa, with a common passion for helping people in more ways than one. They decided to create a company that would provide high-quality prescription frames and shades (plus a monocle) for honest, reasonable prices. Warby Parker’s vintage-inspired glasses cost only $95, compared to the $500+ pairs you’ll find at most optical boutiques.

WP is able to do this by creating their own, timeless designs and selling directly to us, the consumers. They cut out the extra profits to licensing companies and boutiques, while still offering superior glasses, complete with polycarbonate prescription lenses and anti-reflective lens coating. What makes the brand even cooler is that for every pair they sell, they send a pair to someone who can’t afford them. To promote community sustainability, they also partner with non-profits to teach rising low-income entrepreneurs to sell spectacles of their own.

I mean, really. Warby Parker is like that girl we went to high school with that was doing absolutely everything right. She applied early admission and got into every school. She played three sports, but still looked like a Covergirl. And she volunteered weekly at the Boys & Girls Club, so we couldn’t even hate on her.

The great thing about that girl, and WP, is that they inspire us to be better. And with this new campaign, Warby Parker x DonorsChoose.org, they’ve set the bar even higher.

WP x DC on Make A Gif

Introducing the Gardner in Whiskey Tortoise sunglasses. The sleek, geometric design features the classic tortoise shell pattern, flecked with school bus yellow, to honor the tons of children you’ll be helping out when you purchase a pair. When you buy these $95 shades, Warby Parker will make a $30 donation to DonorsChoose.org, an organization that allows anyone, anywhere to help fund class projects online. Teachers post requests for materials on the website, like books for young avid readers or instruments for budding little musicians. And once the amount needed to pay for those supplies has been donated, Donor’s Choose buys and ships them to the classrooms in need.

And if you’re like me, and feel especially drawn to a specific project, like rulers for a second grade class in Colorado to use during math and geography lessons, Warby Parker allows you to pick. Select a project you like, and they’ll make the donation. Even better still, WP will still send a pair of glasses to someone who needs them. So, in addition to adding some perfect sunnies to your collection, you also provide the gift of clear sight to someone else, and help contribute to the growing minds of children.

Warby Parker x DonorsChoose.org might literally be the best campaign by a retail fashion brand ever! With one pair of expertly designed, snazzy shades, you’re literally giving to others twice as much as you treat yo’ self. Can you imagine the good karma?

A wise man, Jay-Z, once said, “The purest form of giving is anonymous to anonymous.” I’d like to add to Jigga’s quote by saying, the purest form of giving is anonymous to anonymous, twice. With sunglasses on.

Let me know what you think of the Warby Parker x DonorsChoose.org campaign below!

Ciclely Haire

Who inspires your style?
I keep up with a lot of fashion bloggers and Youtubers. My favorites are Shirley B. Eniang, Patricia Bright, Jenn Im and Ariel Sansaricq. I also read magazines like Nylon, Essence and Elle. I check a few fashion websites pretty frequently, including Styleblazer and Refinery29. And then there are plenty of celebrities whose style I love, like Beyonce, Demi Lovato, Jessica Alba, Kourtney Kardashian, and Rihanna (sometimes).

If you could trade wardrobes with any person who would it be? Why?
I would live in Olivia Pope’s (Scandal) wardrobe Monday through Friday. That woman has given a whole new meaning to the term, power suit. And her white trenchcoat is iconic. But then, I would love to rock Solange’s wardrobe on the weekends. It’s effortless and sexy, but still fun and edgy too.

Name your top 3 places to shop.
I always describe Forever 21 as that on-again-off-again boyfriend. Even when you try to venture out, you know Forever 21 is going to have something you need.  Target is also a favorite of mine. They keep up with fashion trends, the prices aren’t outlandish, and they always have my size. I guess my third favorite place to shop would be thrift stores. I know that’s such a cliché, but there are days when my entire outfit is from Goodwill or Savers or Maude V.

Do you prefer group shopping or solo missions? Why?
It depends on what I’m shopping for and where I’m shopping. Most of the time, I just go in on a solo mission to buy jeans or shoes or something. But if I’m at a thrift store or Topshop or somewhere, where the things you pick up can go either way, it helps to have a fresh pair of eyes to say, “That palm tree-printed top is just too weird,” or “That sweatshirt is not worth $50.”
